Wiens, Dieker will anchor Canton-Galva cross country

The Canton-Galva cross-country team will look for leadership from these returning letter-winners and seniors: (from left) Julia Gormley, Kaylee Littrell, Trey Wedel, Lane Wiens, Krystal May, Brittany Dieker. Two returning juniors will anchor Canton-Galva?s cross-country team this season under ninth-year coach Lyle Silsby.

Lane Wiens will lead the boys? team.

?Lane was our best boys? runner last season,? Silsby said. ?He is looking to improve on his best time from last year, which was a 20:00 for the 5-K.?

Anchoring the girls? team is Brittany Dieker.

?Brittany set a life personal-best time in the last race of the season, and she also is looking to improve on that,? Silsby said.

?These two will be the backbone of the team this year, and I am counting on them for quality leadership, which I know they are both capable of.?

Two newcomers include freshman Cash Toews and sophomore Kenzee Hiebert.

?I am glad to see Cash running for us this fall,? Silsby said. ?He will be a great asset for us and is a runner that will be exciting to see run in the coming years. Kenzee did not run for us last year, but has potential to be a solid runner.?

With small numbers this season, the Eagles may not field full teams.

?Right now there are only three boy runners on the team, so unless we get some more coming out that I do not know about, we will be competing for individual honors only at the meets,? Silsby said.

?We have five girls currently on the roster, but I will have to wait and see if we try to run any meets as a varsity team. There may be a couple that will run in the JV races, leaving us short for a team score.?

The Eagles will open the season at 4 p.m. Thursday in Tescott.
