Hands-on learning in Hillsboro

The Marion County Kansas National Guard recruiter, SSG McDonald, as a community outreach, contacted HMHS Counselor, Jill Hein, with the opportunity of bringing their S.T.E.M. VR exhibits to our school. HMS science teacher, Darlene Bartel, excited for her 7th & 8th grades students to experience the five differently themed VR stations, coordinated with the WMC Media Center to make the all-day event happen. Students enjoyed not only the VR experiences (1943 Berlin Blitz flight, The Human Body, Queen Nefertiti’s Tomb, Mission ISS, Antarctica) but the personal interaction with a real live hero where they learned compass and map skills, tried on tactical gear, and asked questions about NG careers. Groups of students rotated throughout their class period to experience each station. The goal of the event was to spark the imagination of each student and expose them to the possible STEM careers available, and by their positive reactions, it was a huge success!
