Goddard company fortifies manholes in Hillsboro

Manhole-inside.jpg Employees from Mayer Specialty Services in Goddard (above) were on A Steet in Hillsboro last week fortifying the inside wall of a manhole. Workers went into the manhole spraying new concrete on walls visibly crumbling from age, the elements and other conditions. The project is part of the city?s maintenance program, said Larry Paine, city administrator. ?We try to keep water from seeping into the (sewer) system, and spraying the walls is one part (of the solution).? Sewer gasses deteriorate the walls and spraying contributes to the life of the manhole. ?Rebuilding a manhole is expensive,? Paine said. ?From experience in other towns, it costs about $15,000 to do a total rehabilitation.? As with any maintenance program, Paine said, if this type of prevention is ignored, the financial impact would be more than any taxpayer would want to address.
