Goessel Bluebirds

The Goessel Bluebirds are strong this year. Not only does Head Coach Garrett Hiebert have 10 years of experience, but he is also coaching a team of upperclassmen who know how the game is played and they are ready to play it.

In the past couple of years, we have had many young players gain important Friday night experience. We have gotten to the point where we have 10+ kids returning who have already been on the field for meaningful varsity snaps” said Hiebert.

The returning starters are seniors Luke Wiens, Kale Funk, Eddie Gaeddert, Nate Zogleman, and juniors Caiden Duerksen, Logan Sterk and Dylan Riley.

It will be important for our junior and senior classes to provide leadership and maturity to mentor our large group of freshmen and newcomers. We will continue to build an atmosphere where each player is invested in the success of each of their teammates just as much as they are invested in their own success. The idea that individuals succeed only when the team succeeds is important to us. Last year’s senior class was not big, but it will be important for us to find the right combination of kids in the right spots to replace them. More importantly, we must continue to grow and develop positive leaders each year,” said Hiebert.

In addition to the pandemic, the team faces the challenge of coming of a long season of no activities or time together.

I think the first month of the season will be especially important for building team chemistry and learning individual team roles. Another goal of ours is to strive for precision in everything that we do academics, warm-ups, every rep at practice, and every play on Friday nights,” said Hiebert. “We need to get bigger, faster, and stronger if we want to reach our goals. A challenge that we are looking forward to is competing with the best teams on our schedule. I am excited for us as a team and individuals to break through barriers and get better every day as we work towards our goals.”

Coming – The Bluebirds kick-off their season at home against Canton-Galva at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4.

Goessel Volleyball

The bluebirds come back with almost all of their players and they are ready to play and win.

With returning letter winners seniors Raechel Boese, Bethany Herrel and Elizabeth Schmuker and juniors Kaleigh Guhr, Lyna McCombs and Rachael Zogleman, the team should pose some serious competition.

“The 2020 Volleyball Team has almost everyone back from last year. A season of valuable experience and growth last year has given this team a lot of confidence and drive. They should compete well again in the Wheat State League. League teams to contend for the title include Herington, Rural Vista, and Little River. This team looks forward to competing again this fall,” said Head Coach of 16 years, Chrystal Guhr.

Coming – The bluebirds season opens with a non-league meet at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept 1 at home. They will then play at 4 p.m. at home again on Tuesday, Sept 8 against Little River and Peabody.
