TC in top 3 of preseason basketball polls

Preseason coaches? and media polls have been released for men?s and women?s basketball following the KCAC Basketball Media Day Oct. 7.

Men?The Tabor College men?s basketball team topped both polls. In the coaches? poll, Tabor received nine first-place votes and 90 points. The University of Saint Mary (78 points) received the final first-place vote.

The coaches? poll was rounded out by Ottawa (68), Sterling (65), Southwestern (60), Friends (48), McPherson (46), Bethany (33), Kansas Wesleyan (32) and Bethel (20).

Tabor received seven first-place votes in the media poll and tallied 90 points. Sterling and the University of Saint Mary tied for second with 80 points and one first-place vote each. Friends (66)?received the final first-place vote. Completing the media poll were Ottawa (60), McPherson (55), Southwestern (55), Bethany (32), Kansas Wesleyan (24) and Bethel (11).

Tabor was 20-13 last season, having won the KCAC tournament, then losing to No. 3 Indiana University Southeast in the first round of the NAIA national tournament.

Three Bluejays have been named to the 2014-15 preseason team:?senior guard Dewayne Biggs, senior forward Andrew Thomas, and sophomore forward Lance Carter.

Tabor is scheduled to open the season Nov. 3 at Oklahoma Baptist. Conference play begins Dec. 4 at Southwestern.

Women?The Tabor women?s basketball team ranks third in both the coaches? and media polls.

In the coaches? poll, Tabor earned 77 points. Friends topped the poll with six first-place votes and 85 points. Southwestern (84 points)?claimed the final four first-place votes.

Rounding out the coaches? poll were Ottawa (62), Kansas Wesleyan (57), Sterling (49), Bethany (34), McPherson (32), Bethel (31)?and the University of Saint Mary (29).

Tabor received one first-place vote in the media poll and tallied 85 points. Southwestern ranked first with five first-place votes and 94 points. Friends claimed four first-place votes (91).

Completing the media poll were Sterling (57), Kansas Wesleyan (54), Ottawa (50), Bethel (42), University of Saint Mary (33), McPherson (27) and Bethany (17).

Tabor concluded the season with a 21-11 overall record. The Bluejays won the KCAC tournament over top-seeded Southwestern, then narrowly lost to Northwestern in the opening round of the NAIA national tournament.

Two Bluejays have been named to the 2014-15 preseason team: senior Tonisha Dean, and sophomore Tena Loewen, both guards.

Tabor is scheduled to open the season Oct. 31 at the Doane Classic. Conference play is scheduled to begin Dec. 4 at Southwestern.
