The Goessel cross-country program returns six letter-winners for Brian Lightner?s second year as coach.

The boys will be fairly young this year, but the Bluebirds do return two senior letter-winners?Leighton Wagner and Zach Wiens?who will provide leadership.

?Both Leighton and Zach improved significantly last year,? Lightner said. ?I am hoping they are able to continue to improve.?

Lightner said he will look to first-time runners to field a full team as the Bluebirds seek to improve upon last season?s sixth-place finish at regionals.

The Goessel girls, meanwhile, return four of seven members from last year?s fourth-place Class 1A state team, including three of the four runners who scored points for the team.

Those include returning letter-winners juniors Jennifer Meysing and Lauren Rymill and sophomore Julia Nightengale. Sophomore Maddy Meier returns as an additional letter-winner.

?We hope to improve on our state placement from last year and have a girl in the top 20 individually,? Lightner said. ?The girls have been diligent to their summer running program, and I am excited to see what they can do this year in 1A.?

Goessel will open the season at Clearwater Sept. 3. Races begin at 4:30 p.m.
