Seven Trojans feted for league softball

Seven players from Hills?boro High School?s Class 3A state runnerup softball team?including all six seniors?have received recognition from Central Kansas League coaches.

Hillsboro won the league title with a 19-1 record and posted the best season record in school history at 24-2.

Five Trojans were picked for the all-league first team, one for the second team and one received honorable mention.

Julie Sinclair was a unanimous first-team pitcher. The senior left-hander was 13-2 with an earned-run average of 0.83 and recorded 109 strikeouts.

The Trojans? two senior catchers, Madison Klein and Bradli Nowak, were first-team selections at other positions. Klein was picked for second base and Nowak as a designated player. The pair shared time between second base and catcher.

Klein led the team with a .519 batting average and 34 runs batted in. She had a slugging percentage of .779, including three home runs, and led the team with 32 runs scored.

Nowak hit .467 with a team-high five home runs and 10 doubles. She drove in 31 runs and led the team in slugging percentage at .827.

Allison Weber was a first-team pick as a utility player; she split time between pitcher and third base. The senior right-hander posted a 10-0 record with an ERA of 1.85; she struck out 88 batters and walked 29.

Weber had a combined fielding percentage of .957 at the two positions. At the plate, the lead-off slap hitter posted a .389 average and was second on the team in runs scored with 30 and tied Klein for the team lead in stolen bases with 11.

Emily Jost was recognized for her play in center field and with the bat. The senior committed only one error all season for a fielding percentage of .938. At the plate, she batted .397 with 15 RBIs and scored 31 runs.

Senior Kennedy Lucero was picked as a second-team outfielder. She committed only one error for fielding percentage of .909. At the plate, she batted .254 with 11 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

The only non-senior to receive recognition was junior Shannon Heiser, who received honorable mention for her first season at shortstop. She finished with a fielding percent of .931 while hitting .333 with 15 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

?Overall, I like how versatile each of the girls could be and the leadership they brought to the team,? coach Stephanie Sinclair said. ?Not very many coaches in the state have as many girls who can play multiple positions as Hillsboro, especially the senior class.?

During their four years with the program, the six seniors spearheaded an 88-13 record, including three state tournament appearances, a 3A championship in 2012 and consecutive state-runnerup finishes?in Class 2-1A in 2014 and 3A in 2015.

?I will truly miss the girls and their leadership,? sinclair said.
