Sechrist runner-up in Class 3A race

Hillsboro?s Emily Sechrist shows the form that led her to a silver medal at the Class 3A state cross-country race Saturday at Rim Rock Farm near Lawrence. The senior capped her high school career with two gold medals and two silver medals at state. Don Ratzlaff / Free PressHillsboro senior Emily Sechrist completed her outstanding high school cross-country career with a second-place finish in the Class 3A race at Rim Rock Farm near Lawrence.

Sechrist covered the 4-kilometer course in 15 minutes, 33.1 seconds, finishing behind only Kaylee Bogina of Arma-Northeast, who crossed the line in 15:12.5.

?Emily ran very well in spite of the cold and windy conditions,? coach Stuart Holmes said. ?She ran her fastest time ever at Rim Rock.?

The 3A field was particularly strong this year as four of the runners, including Sechrist, had previously earned a state championship in either cross country or the 3,200 meters in track and field.

?Emily had an outstanding season and did all she could?she gave it her all, which is all any of us can do,? Holmes said. ?She should feel good about what she has accomplished in high school cross country. Winning two state titles and being second the other two years is an awesome achievement.

?Her dedication and self discipline have been exemplary.?

Joining Sechrist in the race was classmate Karyn Leihy, who placed 74th in a field of 99 runners with a time of 19:04.1.
