Warrior baseball features new coach and new faces

The Marion baseball team boasts several new faces this spring, from first-year coach Roger Schroeder to the eight freshmen joining the roster.

?We?ve got a good young group,? Schroeder said. ?They?re young?talented, but young. If we can get them all pulling together in the same direction early on, I think we?ll have a chance to be pretty successful.?

The Warriors also have several players returning, including three sophomores (Austin Pedersen, Jacob Harper, and Ethan Hett) and two upperclassmen (junior Cole Lewman and senior Corey Seacat).

?We?re going to rely on them pretty heavily,? Schroeder said. ?They all gained valuable experience last year.?

He also said two freshman, Dylan Seacat and Caleb Williams, will probably play right away.

?If we can get them up to speed, I think we can be successful,? Schroeder said. ?Hopefully, they?re going to grow up a bit for us.?

Changes are happening for the Warriors in the program in general.

?I?m trying to bring more of a structured, disciplined approach to what we?re doing,? Schroeder said. ?The kids seem to be receptive so far and they?ve been working hard the first couple weeks we?ve been out here.

?I feel like if we can carry that over to the field and play good defensive and not make mental mistakes, I feel like it can keep us in games.?

He said he was not yet sure what to expect from their schedule, since this is Marion?s first year playing in the Heart of America league.

?Not only am I a first-year coach, but this is also a new league for us,? he said. ?It?s going to be show up in the yard one day and find who?s across the field from us.

?I?m excited to get started,? he added. ?We?ve been fairly fortunate with weather to at least be outside a couple of days. Hopefully, it continues and we can get some work done.

?We really do have a chance to be successful. It?s just a matter of getting everybody pulling in the right direction.?
