The Marion High School softball squad has six seniors returning to lead a team that goes 21 deep.

The Warriors lost six players to graduation, but increased their numbers to the point of being able to field a full-fledged junior varsity squad.

?It?s definitely a plus?it?s important for our players to get into games, to get experience playing and improve their skills,? coach Sandy Black said. ?Last year was harder because we did not have quite enough for both.?

In addition to the influx of youth, Marion has a core of six seniors. With Austin Percell at first, Lauren Helmer at second, Kristen Waner at short and Lana Carroll behind the plate, the Warrior infield is also highly experienced.

?I?m not saying the outfield isn?t strong, but I think our infield will be very good,? Black said.

Tacy Taylor and Megan Schmidt will fill two outfield positions.

?I have some options with some girls who are of roughly equal skill levels and some girls who are versatile and can play a number of different positions,? Black said.

Shelby Percell will step in at third base, and Waner, Alex Cain and Raelene Allen will pitch.

Black declined to speculate about the batting order on opening day.

?I?m going to use all of the practice time I can to study up before I decide what the lineup will be,? she said.

The junior varsity hosts Nickerson March 27 and the varsity is set to open at home against Sterling the following day.
