The Marion golf team welcomes a new coach to the program in what likely will be a rebuilding year for the Warriors.

?We have a young crew, and it?s about them improving and getting better,? said coach Lucas King, who takes over for Lee Leiker.

?We just have a bunch of new golfers who are just getting out and being outdoors and improving their skills,? King said. ?So just coming out and working and improving and getting some guys to state is kind of our goal.?

The team added a couple of freshmen to its ranks as well as several sophomores and juniors, combining for a roster of about 12, King said.

Lending experience to the mix will be returners Hogan Lovelady and Wiley Lundy.

For right now, King said, finding opportunities to practice at the local course is proving to be a challenge because of grounds?keeping issues last year. ?We?re just being flexible,? he said. ?It?s been kind of tough, not being able to use greens and stuff. ?

King said the Warriors have a solid schedule coming up, giving his golfers additional experience. ?We?ll get a lot of opportunities to beat and play different golfers,? he said. ?It?s a young crew, a building year, preparing for regionals and state next year. I don?t think we really expect anything. It?ll just be a fun year improving and having a good time.?

Marion is scheduled to start its season April 3 at the Herington Invitational. The start time is 1 p.m.
