The Peabody-Burns Warrior track team will look to individuals and experience to find success this season.
?We are returning a large percentage of students from last year?s team,? said first-time coach Brian Lightner. ?We will be small in numbers, but are expecting a high level of individual improvement and accomplishment.?
A competitor to watch will be nine-time state champion Lauren Pickens, Lightner said. Pickens is a senior and has swept the state gold medal in the 100, 200 and 400 meters all three previous years.
Paige Lewis and Silvia Flores will round out the girls? squad in the hurdles and sprints.
?With only three girls, it will be a challenge to compete in the team scoring,? Lightner said. ?But each girl shows potential in her events.?
The boys? team returns three seniors this season: Sheldon Wiebe in distance races, Spencer Moffett in the throws, and Andrew Sheffler in the sprints.
?These seniors have shown up eager to improve on their junior-year performances and their leadership is a key to a successful season,? Lightner said.
Lucas Larson, Justin Rempel, and Zach Peterson will round out the throws squad, while Seth Topham, Zachary Preheim and Allen McLaughlin will contribute in the sprints, hurdles and jumps.
?Overall, these are a great group of kids who are a joy to coach,? Lightner said. ?They want to get better and improve each and every meet.
?We are looking forward to this year and seeing what each of them can do as the season progresses.?
