Hillsboro baseball team combines with Peabody-Burns, building core

Jack Parks, Landon Roberts, Jorge Hanschu, Brooks Gardner, Caleb Potucek and Hunter Hein. Treena Lucero / Special to the Free PressThe combined Hillsboro/ Peabody-Burns baseball team is led by first year coach Tyson Kendrick.

The Trojans won the first game of regionals in 2018 after a 10-12 season. They look to build upon their success from last year and compete for a regional title.

The team looks to three returning players who all received post-season honors last year.

Seniors Brookes Gardner and Jorge Hanschu and junior Caleb Potucek return to lead the team. Junior Hunter Hein and Jack Parks and sophomore Landon Roberts will be big contributors as well as some key freshmen to fill in the gaps.

The coach hopes to develop pitchers to compete at the varsity level.

“A lot of times when they are younger they can get away with one pitch and athleticism. However, when you are competing against 18 year olds no matter how hard you throw you need a secondary pitch. With a younger pitching staff we will need to be solid defensively to help them out as much as we can,” said Kendrick.

Coming – The boys play their next game against Smoky Valley on Tuesday, April 9 at Smoky Valley. They start at 3 p.m. They also play at 4 p.m. on April 12 at Hesston.
