Goessel golf in rebuilding year

by Janae Rempel<p>The Free Press<p>With just two returning varsity players, the Goessel golf team will have a rebuilding year this season.<p>State qualifiers senior Luke Unruh and junior Rhett Makovec return to lead the team. <p>Senior Jordan Schmucker joins them as a returning letter-winner on Goessel?s 16-person roster.<p>The Bluebirds graduated Lucas Hiebert, Lawton Makovec and Kellen Froese from last year?s regional runner-up team. Fifth-year coach Chad Lindeman will look to a number of newcomers to fill the void. They include seniors Jade Sterk and Matt Regier, and sophomores Braden Roby, Jayce Schmidt and Carson Sterk. <p>?I am excited to see what the (team) can do this year as we will be lacking varsity experience but looking toward some of our underclassmen to improve and possibly fill those roles,? Lindeman said. ?We hope to improve with every tournament.?<p>Lindeman said he expects to see constant improvement and a competitive race to comprise the varsity team.<p> ?It should be very competitive to put together a group of six to fill the varsity spots,? he said. ?I expect the team to work hard and get better every day. It should be exciting to see what we can accomplish this season.?<p>After opening its season April 5 at Herington, Goessel was scheduled to compete at Hillsboro at 3 p.m. April 8.
