The Centre track and field team returns one state qualifier from last year’s squad for eighth-year coach Alan Stahlecker.
Junior Kate Basore placed seventh in the javelin at the Class 1A state meet a year ago with a throw of 121 feet, 9 inches.
She holds the Wheat State League record in that event, and also will contribute in the shot put.
Senior Summer Espinoza also is a returning letter-winner. She, too, will throw the shot put.
Meanwhile, the boys will compete without graduated state qualifier Barrett Smith.
Sophomore Xavier Espinoza returns the most points for the Cougars. He narrowly missed qualifying for state in the 400-meter dash and will also compete in the 100 and long jump.
Senior Brendon Bina will contribute in all three throwing events, specializing in shot put and javelin, Stahlecker said.
Junior Max Svoboda will compete in the sprints and throw the javelin; Stahlecker said Svoboda may run the 400 this season.
“We will have far too many events that we will not cover to be very competitive in team scoring,” Stahlecker said. “We will have several athletes that I expect to compete very well in every meet. The returners should be able to lead the team.”
Centre will open the season April 4 at a Central Kansas Track League meet in Sterling.
