The Goessel boys? basketball team returns one starter from last year?s 9-13 season, and fourth-year coach Curtis Guhr will look to others to step in and fill roles after losing five seniors to graduation.
The Bluebirds? lone returning starter is 5-foot, 11-inch senior Lawton Makovec. Makovec turned in per-game averages of 10.9 points and 3.0 rebounds last season.
Additional returning letter-winners include seniors Connor Davis (6-1) and Kellen Froese (5-10) and junior Zach Wiens (6-3).
?Quickness and ability to handle the ball are definite assets as we head into the season,? Guhr said. ?That being said, we also have several posts looking to fill the void left from graduation.
?Rebounding and on-ball defense will be two areas of focus as we begin practice. Finding the right group to accept their roles and do their jobs will be vital to our success.?
Guhr expects the Blue?birds, who compete in Class 1A-Division I, to be among the top five teams in the Wheat State League. Additional teams to watch include Solomon, Little River, Wakefield and Peabody-Burns.
Last season, Goessel finished with a 3-4 league record.
Goessel will play its season-opener at home Friday against Inman.
