With the loss of five seniors from last year?s squad, the Goessel boys? basketball team will have somewhat of a rebuilding year.
Fifth-year coach Curtis Guhr will look to his upperclassmen to replace what was lost. That begins with the Bluebirds? sole returning starter, Zach Wiens. The 6-foot, 3-inch senior averaged 13.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game a year ago.
Two juniors return as letter-winners: Rhett Makovec (6-2) and Josh Schmidt (5-6).
?With several guys 6-2 or taller, inside play and rebounding will be a key for (us) this year,? Guhr said. ?Ball handling and on-ball defense will be several keys to focus on in practice this season. Finding the right group to accept their roles and do their jobs will be vital to our success.?
Guhr said he anticipates a competitive Wheat State League this season, with Goessel in contention among the top four. Additional teams to watch are Solomon, Rural Vista and Centre. Last year, Goessel finished 2-5 in league play, 6-15 overall.
Goessel will begin the season Friday at Inman. The Bluebirds will host Elyria Christian Tues?day in their home-opener.
