The Canton-Galva Eagles welcome a new coach to the girls? basketball team this season as they look to improve on a 4-17 record last year.

The Eagles lost in the first round of sub-state last year to Pratt-Skyline.

?We will look to build off a four-win season last year,? said coach Dale Dvorak. ?With a new coach and a new system there are lots of questions, but the ladies are working extremely hard.?

The Eagles return three seniors, two of whom were varsity starters last year. They are MaKenzie Farnham, who is 5 feet, 9 inches and averaged more than six points and four rebounds per game last year, and Darci Enns, who is 5-9 and averaged four points and 1.7 rebounds.

Canton-Galva?s third returning starter is sophomore 5-3 Erika Smith, who averaged 6.6 points and 1.7 rebounds.

The Eagles also bring back three letter-winners in senior Scarlet Gagnebin, junior Leah Schmitz and sophomore Lauren Ballantyne.

Dvorak said newcomers Liz Johnson, Keana Haydon and Cayley Johnson will be players to watch this year.

?We are trying to find some complementary players to go with the seniors, so there is varsity time available for some of the young players in our system,? Dvorak said.

The Eagles look to be competitive in a Heart of America league that is going to be tough this season.

?With other teams losing key seniors, the league should be competitive top to bottom this year,? Dvorak said.

The Eagles will start their season Friday with a road game at Elyria Christian.
