The Canton-Galva boys’ basketball team welcomes a new coach and a roster full of newcomers as the Eagles embark on a rebuilding year this season.
“Being my first year at Canton-Galva, I am excited about the opportunity to take over the program and work with some great kids,” said coach Shane Duncan, who is an Eagle alum.
This season will be Duncan’s 12th year of coaching after four years at Lincoln and seven at Ellinwood.
The Eagles’ only returning starter is junior guard/forward A.J. Medley, whom Duncan expects to provide leadership to an untested squad.
“We are a very young and inexperienced team,” Duncan said. “We will have to learn the game speed at the varsity level.
“The only way this is accomplished is through experience. The boys will receive this throughout the season.”
Also returning this year are senior Devin Helton and juniors Trevor Unruh and Austin Bullinger.
Joining the program this season will be seniors Bryan Little and Cody Savage.
The Eagles face an uphill road as they seek to improve and earn wins in a tough Heart of America league that includes Marion and other larger schools.
“The Heart of America is the best small-class league in the state,” Duncan said. “Every year they are represented in the state tournament by numerous teams.”
Despite the challenge facing him, Duncan said the Eagles’ goal this season is to get better every practice and game.
“We will have to take strides forward every time we set foot on the court,” he said.
The Eagles are scheduled to begin their season Nov. 30 when they travel to Elyria Christian, with tipoff slated for 6 p.m.
