Leadership key for GHS football team

These seniors and returning letter-winners will form a solid core for the Goessel football team this season: (from left) Zach Zogleman, Nathaniel Schmucker, Jayce Schmidt, Carson Sterk, Jordan Griffin, Dylan Lindeman. The Goessel football team returns six players with starting experience this season as the Bluebirds look to improve upon last year’s 5-4 record under the direction of sixth-year coach Garrett Hiebert.

The Bluebirds went 3-3 in Wheat State League play and 2-3 in district competition in 2016.

Four senior starters return: Jordan Griffin (6-2, 195) at tight end and defensive end; Carson Sterk (6-1, 170) at guard and defensive end; Nathaniel Schmucker (5-8, 210) at center and Jayce Schmidt (5-10, 150) at tight end.

Junior Zach Zogleman (5-7, 140) and sophomore Dylan Lindeman (6-0, 150) are returning at defensive back.

“This past season, we graduated a small, but very talented, group of seniors,” Hiebert said. “It will be critical that we have players step up this season to fill both leadership roles and on-the-field roles.

“For us to be successful, we must continue to demonstrate positive leadership and build trust within our team. Players may need to be open to position changes so we can get our best eight players on the field.”

The Bluebirds will kick off the season at Wakefield Friday. Goessel will host Centre in its home-opener Sept. 8.
