Marion High School will look to Class 3A third-place medalist Jordan Hett to set the pace for an experienced boys? cross-country squad hoping to qualify for state as a team this season.

?We have a large group of seniors this year and I am excited to see how they do,? coach Rebecca Hofer said.

In his senior season, Hett, a three-time state qualifier, will lead the aspirations of the boys? team. Close behind are classmates Patrick McCarty and Jacob Cope, who narrowly missed qualifying for state in 2011 by finishing 11th and 12th, respectively, at regionals.

?I expect the seniors (boys) should have a very successful season this year,? said Hofer, adding that she has high hopes for several underclassmen, too.

?I would love to see our entire boys team go to state this year,? she said. ?We were very close last year, and I think that it is a very reachable goal.?

Leading the pack for the girls? team will be Kaelyn Thierolf, who won the Heart of America league title but was unable to compete at regionals or state due to her role on the Marion volleyball team.

Joining her will be a promising freshman newcomer, McKenzee Remmers.

?McKenzee is looking very strong, and I am also anxious to see how Kaelyn will do this year,? Hofer said.

?I have high hopes for (Thierolf and Hett), but we still have some work to do before our first meet,? she added. ?I think they can both be very successful in the upcoming season.?

Hofer said her main goal is to see everyone improve from the level they competed at last year.

?I love watching the runners meet new personal records and feel proud of what they accomplished,? she said.

The Warriors are scheduled to open the season with a meet at Abilene Sept. 1.
