After several young players got their feet wet last year with varsity experience, the Goessel football team is hoping to use that time to their advantage this season.
Going into his seventh season as head coach, Garrett Hiebert said it will be important for his returning players to step into leadership roles quickly and play with maturity from the beginning of the season.
“Continued leadership development will be key for us,” he said. “We are looking to create an atmosphere where each player is invested in the success of each of their teammates just as much as they are invested in their own success.”
Returning for Goessel this year will be seniors Zach Zogleman (RB/DB) and Justice Johnson (OL/DL); juniors Dylan Linderman (QB/DB), Jacob Hagewood (RB/LB) and Luke Freeman (OL/DL); and sophomores Luke Wiens (QB/DB), Kale Funk (TE/DB), and Eddie Gaeddert (DL).
Goessel opens up the season at Moundridge on Friday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m. They won’t have their home opener until Friday, Sept. 14, when they host Wakefield at 7 p.m.
