GHS boys seek return to state

These letter-winners and seniors will lead for Goessel cross country this season: front row (from left), Kara Schmucker, Heath Goertzen, Kylee Unruh; back row, Jake Herrel, Ben Wiens, Zach Wiens. The Goessel cross-country boys? team is aiming for a return trip to state in Class 1-A this season and build on last year?s success.

?Although a few members of the state-qualifying team have moved on, seniors Heath Goert?zen, Ben Wiens and Jake Herrel are ready to lead the return,? said second-year coach Tyler Schroeder.

All three are returning letter-winners and state qualifiers and are expected to provide leadership this season. Also expected to contribute is sophomore Zach Wiens, a returning letter-winner and state qualifier.

?Look for Dane Kruger, Aaron Woelk and Zach Wiens to step up and fill key roles,? Schroeder said.

For the girls, Schroeder expects leadership from Kylee Unruh, a sophomore and returning letter-winner.

?(I am) excited to work with the group and (am) anxious to see this group improve,? Schroeder said. ?There is no doubt that this group?s camaraderie and sense of humor will benefit them as they make strides to return to state.?

The Bluebirds are scheduled to open the season at Clearwater Sept. 5, where action is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m.
