Eagles loaded for success

Valerie Stout enters the third season of her second tenure as Canton-Galva volleyball coach with six starters returning from last year?s team.

Stout also coached at Canton-Galva from 1981-1997.

Stout will be looking for seniors Cayla Sommers and Kimmy Voth to lead the Eagles past the first round of sub-state. The Eagles reached the sub-state second round in 2009 for the first time in several years.

Canton-Galva defeated Olpe in the opening round of sub-state and fell to Goessel, then a Heart of America League rival, in the following round to end the season.

Other returning starters are juniors Destiney Hett, Darci Enns, Brittany Leffler and Aly Bressie. Freshman Jennifer Likes will see varsity action as well.

The Eagles will compete in a realigned Heart of America League. The HOA lost Goessel, Little River and Peabody-Burns to the newly formed Wheat State League, but gained Marion from the Mid-Central Activities Association.

?I?m excited,? Stout said. ?I think the girls are, too. Some?times you get in a rut, playing the same teams over and over again. So, I think it will be nice to see some different players and see how we stack up.?

Canton-Galva opens its season Sept. 7 against Bennington.
