With three starters on each side of the ball returning, the Canton-Galva 8-man football team will look to improve on last year?s 5-4 record under the direction of third-year coach Jeff Savage.

Returning starters include senior tight end and linebacker Tanner Klingen?smith (165 pounds), senior running back Trey Moddel?mog (150), junior quarterback and defensive back Travis Unruh (180) and junior defensive end Clayton Sargent (150).

In all, 15 letter-winners return. The Eagles will need to replace their entire offensive line, Savage said.

?We will build an offense and defense around the strength of our team, which may be an ongoing process,? he said.

Savage listed a few other keys to the team?s success.

?(We need to) find out who wants to hit, and create a defense that will run to the ball, (as well as) get the ball to our best playmakers in a variety of ways,? he said.

Savage has high hopes for the upcoming season.

?(Our goals are to) have a winning season and challenge for a playoff spot in a tough district,? he said. ?Staying healthy will be a key. That is something we were not able to do last season, and it hurt our opportunity to make the playoffs.?

Canton-Galva will open the season at Central Christian at 7 p.m. Friday. The Eagles? home-opener will be Sept. 12 against Peabody-Burns. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
