A young Goessel Bluebird volleyball squad will look to defend its Wheat State League title, having finished last season with a perfect, 8-0 record.
The Bluebirds were 29-10 overall and advanced to post-season play, where they finished as sub-state runners-up.
Many new faces will join the effort this season.
?There will be no seniors on this year?s team,? said coach Crysta Guhr in her ninth season. ?So the bulk of playing time will come from younger classmen who are eager to make their own mark in league play and beyond.?
The team will rely on three returning letter-winners: Erin Brubaker, a junior outside hitter; Page Hiebert, a sophomore outside hitter; and Alicen Mey?sing, a sophomore middle hitter.
Newcomers to watch include two juniors: defensive specialist Makaila King and opposite hitter Gentry Thiesen. Sophomore setter Alyssa Booton is also expected to contribute.
?The team hopes to make another deep run into the post season,? Guhr said. ?Tough tournaments will prepare the team well, with competition from Sedgwick, Halstead, Olpe and Hillsboro.?
The Bluebirds were scheduled to open the regular season at Elyria Sept. 3 with matches against Elyria Christian and Ell-Saline. The first home appearance will be the Goessel Invitational, slated for Sept. 14.
