Matthew Yoder won the 135-pound class to lead the Hillsboro wrestling team a sixth-place finish among 18 schools at the Eureka Invitational Saturday.
Yoder went 4-0 with three falls to improve his season record to 16-3.
The Trojans compiled 119 to trail first-place Marion with 157.
?The overall performance of the team was much better this weekend,? coach Scott O?Hare said after a disappointing tournament at Halstead a week earlier. ?This was a very tough tournament and most weight classes had a very deep talent pool.
?The guys competed hard, did a much better job at executing some of the basic wrestling skills, and most of them wrestled with a lot of heart.?
Three other Trojans finished in the top four in their respective classes. Aaron Bina went 3-1 to place second at 160, Justin King 3-1 at 145 to place third and Jared King went 4-1 at 152 to place third.
Also competing for HHS were Bret Mueller 1-2 at 119, Lucas Sinclair 0-2 at 125, Darren Mueller 3-3 at 130, Dimitri McClelland 2-2 at 140, Dylan Delk 3-2 to place fifth at 171, and Evan Just 0-2 at 189.
?Probably one of the most promising things to come out of this tournament was how we finished,? O?Hare said. ?Over the past several years, although we have had our share of success, we have often struggled through the medal round. This has been especially true this season.
?At Eureka, we won four out of five medal-round matches that were contested on the mat.?
JV tournament? The Trojans competed at Stafford Jan. 23. The results were: Matthew Wiebe 5-0 at 152; Tanner Jones 4-1 at 152; Colby Meier 1-4 at 171; Max Bertinchamp 0-4 at 171; AJ Litchfield 2-2 at 189.
Coming? The Trojan varsity will compete at the Cardinal Classic in Hoisington Friday. The JV will compete at the league meet in Marion Saturday.
