Catcher Bri Loewen prepares to catch a throw too late to catch the Nickerson runner?s strong slide that brought the run in safely. The Panthers swept Hillsboro 10-0 and 8-2 April 28 in Hillsboro.

Courtney Weber?s grand-slam home run with two outs in the fifth inning powered Hillsboro High to a 10-6 victory in the first game of a doubleheader at Ellin?wood on Friday.

Hillsboro completed the sweep with 12-1 win in Game 2 behind Weber?s one-hit, complete-game pitching.

In Game 1, Weber played second base with Franny Gottsch on the mound. With the Eagles leading 5-3 after a four-run burst in the bottom of the fourth inning, Krista Reimer singled with one out in the top of the fifth. Amy Bartel reached on an error but was forced out on a ground ball to the shortstop by Tara Heinrichs.

Aubrey Meier then walked to load the bases for Weber, who ripped a line drive into the outfield. With Ellin?wood?s extended fences, Weber made it easily around the bases.

Weber pitched the final two innings of the game to save the victory for Gottsch, who evened her season record to 5-5.

In Game 2, Weber controlled the game for Hillsboro, limiting the Eagles to only two hitters beyond the minimum. She struck out two and walked one to improve her record to 5-1.

The Trojans scored all the runs they would need with a six-run uprising in the top of the third. Gottsch, Bartel and Heinrichs all contributed base hits to the rally.

The Trojans added a four-run surge in the fifth to nail down the win in five innings and improve their season record to 10-6.

Nickerson?Hillsboro met its match in Nickerson all-league pitcher Elise Beguelin last Tuesday, dropping a doubleheader to her and her Panther teammates, 10-0, 8-2, at the Sports Complex in Hillsboro.

The Trojans managed only three hits in the first-game shutout, and didn?t get their first one until Krista Reimer broke the ice to lead off the fifth. Bri Loewen then followed with a single. But Reimer was picked off at second by the Nickerson catcher, Amy Bartel struck out and Tara Heinrichs flied out to end Hills?boro?s only scoring threat.

Meanwhile, 10 Trojan errors didn?t help the cause of starter Courtney Weber (4-1), who surrendered 10 hits in seven innings. Three errors in the third contributed to the first three Panther runs. They added two more runs in the fourth and five in the top of the seventh to cruise to the win.

In Game 2, Nickerson got off to a 3-0 lead after two innings, but Hillsboro managed two scores off Beguelin in the bottom of the third to make it a contest at 3-2.

But the Panthers took control in their next at bat, scoring three times with three hits and a Trojan error against starter Franny Gottsch (4-5).

The Trojans? first three batters?Taylor Nikkel, Sammy Koons and Steph Sanders?combined for 6-for-7 hitting, but the other six batters went 0-for-18.

The sweep dropped Hills?boro?s season record to 8-6.

Coming?Hillsboro was scheduled to host Halstead for a doubleheader on Tuesday for the Trojans? only games this week. The next outing will be a doubleheader Tuesday, May 12, at Haven.
