Weber leads Trojans at 3 tournaments

The Hillsboro tennis team capped a busy three-tournament week with a seventh-place finish at the Central Kansas League tournament in Pratt.

Allison Weber led the Trojan charge at all three events, including a runnerup finish at Pratt in No. 1 singles.

Weber earned a first-round bye, then defeated Katelyn Hageman of Hess?ton (9-1) in the semifinals before losing in three sets to Besa Bwalya of Hoisington, one of the top players in Class 3A.

In No. 2 singles, Claire Heyen lost to McKenzie Thrasher of Sterling (9-2) and Kayla Reid of Lyons (9-2) before beating Victoria Smalling of Nickerson (9-2) to place seventh.

In No. 1 doubles, Allison Gray and Hannah Funk placed 10th, losing to Hoi?sing?ton (9-1), Lyons (9-2), Nickerson and Kingman (9-6).

In No. 2 doubles, Anna Glanzer and Destiny Sharp defeated Kingman (9-6), lost to Sterling (9-8), earned a win against Larned by injury default, then lost to Hesston (9-1) and Lyons (9-2) to claim sixth.

Pratt won the team title (80), followed by Sterling (75), Hoisington and Hesston (70), Smoky Valley (62), Larned (49), Hillsboro (48), Lyons (37), Haven (32), Nickerson (15), Kingman (20).

Ellsworth?Hillsboro placed fifth among five teams at the round-robin tournament in Ellsworth Tuesday.

Allison Weber, facing three of the top players in Class 3A?Besa Bwalya of Hoisington, Rachel Herzog of Ellsworth and Jessi John?son of Larned?went 2-2, losing only to Bwalya and Herzog.

?Allison played one of her best matches of the year against Johnson, using a variety of long and short shots as well as just getting everything back to frustrate the Larned girl,? coach Bob Woelk said.

?Allison gave a strong effort against Herzog, but she was tired and the players were also battling a swarm of flying insects. It was difficult to focus.?

In No. 1 doubles, Claire Heyen and Allison Gray went 0-4.

Smoky Valley?Allison Weber won the singles title at last Monday?s make-up tournament with victories over Erika Lein?bach of Hess?ton (8-0), Kate?lyn Reif?s?chneider of McPherson (8-5), Katelyn Hageman of Hess?ton (8-4) and Kinsey Ford of Abilene (8-1).

Destiny Sharp went 0-4 in singles to place 16th.

In doubles, Claire Heyen and Allison Gray went 1-3 to finish 12th and Hannah Funk and Anna Glanzer went 0-4 to place 16th.

Coming? The Trojans were scheduled to compete at Abilene Tuesday, then will make the long trip to Leavenworth for the Class 3-2-1A regional tournament.

?We were fortunate to escape the loaded regional in Hutchinson,? coach Bob Woelk said. ?Because Hesston and Wichita Collegiate dropped to 3A, the local regional filled up, and we have been sent east.

?I have little or no information on most of the teams we will face there,? he added. ?But I do know that last year?s state champion, Goodwin of Kansas City Christian, will be there.

?I believe we have a better chance of qualifying players in our regional than if we would have been placed at Hutch.?
