Weather shortens MHS Invitational

With only 12 events completed Thursday, storms put a damper on the Marion High School track team?s annual Warrior Invitational. Before lightning led to the suspension of the meet, competitors from as near as Peabody and from as far away as Garnett recorded results.

The Marion girls flexed their muscles with five top-3 finishes. Julia Zeiner (36-11⁄2) and Kayley Heerey (32-101⁄2) finished 1-2 in the triple jump, with Zeiner?s mark exceeding the former meet record by 11 inches.

Third place finishers on the girls side included: Camille Christensen (13:03.35) in the 3,200; Whitney Gordon (4-10) in the high jump; and the 4×800 relay of Jaclyn DeForest, Bridget Lundy, Amanda Richmond and Christensen (11:57.44).

Peabody-Burns thrower Paige Barnes (29-10) placed third in the girls shot put.

The Marion boys placed four in the top three.

Sheldon Boone (166-06) and Mitchell Leppke (152-10) placed 1-2 in the javelin throw. Elliot Hett (17-71⁄2) placed third in the long jump, and Nick Klenda (45-11⁄4) placed third in the shot put.

Peabody-Burns placed second in the boys 4×800 relay, with Jacob Simmonds, Josh Klarmann, Kendall Wiebe and Aaron Topham putting together a time of 9:12.14 in the event.

Coming?Marion was scheduled to compete at the Herington CKTL Tuesday and again at Smoky Valley Friday. The Warriors are also slated for a trip to the KU Relays Saturday.
