Warriors sixth in Winter Duals

Bryce Shults wrestles his Rock Creek opponent during Marion?s second dual Friday. Shults won by fall to help Marion to a 51-21 victory. Marion placed sixth overall.The Marion wrestling team finished sixth among a field of 16 Friday at the Marion County Winter Duals.

Teams were divided into four pools. Half wrestled in Marion and half in Hillsboro.

Based on their performance in pool play, teams moved on to either a championship or consolation bracket to determine the final places.

The Warriors competed in the Blue Pool, where they went 2-1. Marion defeated Fredonia, 54-22, and Rock Creek, 51-21, before losing a close dual to Clay Center, 39-33.

?They had some of their better kids where our better kids were,? coach Chad Adkins said of Clay Center. ?They were just a little bit better than us in places. We lost a couple matches that we could?ve won. It was definitely within reach.?

Clay Center boasted two state runners-up. Tyler Palic lost by five to a state runner-up at 195 pounds.

In the four-team consolation bracket for fifth place, Marion defeated Douglass, 60-21, then lost to Burlington, 45-33 to finish sixth with an overall record of 3-2.

?We gave those two really good teams everything we had, and it was close,??Adkins said of Marion?s two losses. ?That?s all we can ask for.?

Individually, Adkins highlighted the performance of Jarrett Johnson at 126 pounds and Adam Kjellin at 285, but said every Warrior wrestled well.

?(Adam) won some big matches for us,??he said. ?Jarrett Johnson wrestled better than he has. Probably had his best tournament.?

Coming?Marion will resume competition after the holiday break at Norton Jan. 8-9.
