Warrior’s represented well on HOA League list

Eight members of Marion’s Class 2-1A state runners-up baseball team have received recognition from Heart of America coaches. In addition, seven have received All-State honors.

Four Warriors received first-team All-HOA recognition.

Senior pitcher Sam Zinn went 4-1 on the mound in 2019, recording an ERA of 0.81 in 26 innings of work. He threw two complete games and recorded two saves. Zinn struck out 46 batters.

In two seasons on varsity, Zinn went 9-2 and recorded an ERA of 2.46 over 59 2/3 innings with 86 strikeouts.

Zinn was named Pitcher of the Year in Class 2-1A and was feted on the all-state first team.

Senior first baseman Evann Heidebrecht batted .500 this season (26-for-52), including four doubles, two triples and two home runs. He drove in 16 runs. In four years at Marion, Heidebrecht batted .363 (78-for-215) and drove in 65 runs.

Heidebrecht also received first-team all-state recognition.

Junior third baseman Luke Lanning batted .394 this season (28-for-71), including seven doubles and three triples. He drove in 24 runs.

Lanning received honorable mention all-state honors.

Junior utility Cooper Carpenter batted .391 this season (27-for-69), including seven doubles. He drove in 28 runs.

Carpenter received honorable mention all-state honors at second base.

Three Warriors were named to the second team.

Senior pitcher Chase Stringer went 3-1 on the mound in 2019, recording an ERA of 2.31 over 30 1/3 innings of work. He struck out 30 batters.

In four years at Marion, Stringer recorded an ERA of 2.73 over 95 innings with an overall record of 12-2. He struck out 102 batters. Stringer pitched two shutouts and one no-hitter.

Stringer was named to the all-state second team.

Junior pitcher Jaxton Tracy went 5-0 in 2019, recording an ERA of 2.05 over 30 2/3 innings. He struck out 44 batters. Tracy pitched one complete game.

Tracy received honorable mention all-state honors.

Senior designated hitter Blaine Mermis batted .368 this season (21-for-57), including seven doubles. He drove in 19 runs. In three seasons on varsity, Mermis batted .343 (37-for-108) and drove in 40 runs.

Mermis received honorable mention all-state honors.

Meanwhile, senior outfielder Cameron Steward received honorable mention All-HOA recognition. Steward batted .321 this season (9-for-28) and drove in eight runs. In three years on varsity, Steward batted .300 (9-for-30).

Coach Roger Schroeder was named the Class 2-1A Coach of the Year.

Marion was 20-2 overall this season.

Outfield: Joel Came, sr., Ell-Saline; Cody Hazelton, sr., Moundridge; Derick Johnson, so., Inman; Cole Sommers, jr., Remington.

Utility: Weston Sommers, sr., Remington; Jayden Leonhardt, so., Inman.
