Warriors qualify 10 for state track

The Marion track and field team came away with 11 top-four finishes and 10 state qualifiers after competing at the Class 3A regional meet at Lyons Friday.

For the girls, Kristen Herzet qualified for state in two events, placing second in the discus with a throw of 118 feet, 9 inches, and coming in fourth in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 36-41/4 that bettered her previous mark by 2 feet.

Marissa Jacobson also qualified for state in two individual events, placing second in the long jump (16-11) and fourth in the triple jump (35-33/4). Jacobson was also a part of the state-qualifying 4×400 relay with teammates Sam Richmond, Sam Kelsey and Marshelle Conley. Their time of 4 minutes, 12.70 seconds was good for fourth place and trimmed more than 8 seconds from their season-best mark.

McKenzee Remmers qualified for state with a fourth-place finish in the 3,200 in a personal-best 12:37.5.

Meanwhile, in boys’ action, Jack Schneider qualified for state in two events. He placed second in the 200 (22.82) and third in the 100 (11.21).

Tyler Palic qualified in the discus with a third-place throw of 147-6, while Bryce Shults cleared 13 feet in the pole vault for the first time this season to place third and qualify for state.

Colin Williams was Marion’s fourth boys’ qualifier. He finished fourth in the 1,600 with a season-best 4:51.76.

“What a tough regional track and field meet, but we came through it in pretty good shape,” coach Grant Thierolf said. “We had some great performances that didn’t make it and some fantastic performances that made it to state.

“Overall, a very solid day for the Warriors in the toughest regional in the state for Class 3A. We look forward to next weekend.”
