Warriors place 9 on All-HOA teams

Nine members of Marion’s 23-2, record-setting Class 3A state runners-up baseball team have received recognition from Heart of America league coaches as announced last week.

Four Warriors received first-team honors.

Sophomore pitcher Blaine Mermis recorded an ERA of 1.53 and a 5-0 record over 362⁄3 innings pitched. He gae up 32 hits and 16 runs (eight earned). He walked 12 batters and struck out 29.

Senior third baseman Peyton Heidebrecht batted .431 (31-for-72) over 24 games this season, including 10 doubles and two triples. He drove in 35 runs. In his career, he batted .375 (75-for-200).

Senior center fielder Mason Pedersen batted .362 (29-for-80) over 24 games this season, including two doubles and two triples. He had 19 RBIs. In his three-year career, he batted .325 (69-for-212).

Junior utility Cole Srajer, who filled a variety of positions, including middle infield and outfield, batted .350 (28-for-80) over 24 games, hitting five doubles, one triple and one home run. He had 20 RBIs.

Three Warriors received second-team honors.

Junior pitcher Corbin Wheeler recorded an ERA of 1.47 over 19 innings pitched. He was 3-0 on the mound with 16 strikeouts and two saves.

Senior catcher Nathan Baldwin batted .333 (18-for-54) over 21 games, hitting four doubles and two home runs. He had 16 RBIs. In his career, he batted .224 (35-for-156).

Sophomore first baseman Evann Heidebrecht batted .323 (21-for-65), hitting five doubles and driving in 20 runs.

Two Warriors received honorable mention.

Senior pitcher Seth Savage recorded an ERA of 3.78 over 162⁄3 innings, tallying a 3-0 record. He struck out seven batters.

Junior left fielder Jacob Vondenkamp batted .318 (21-for-66) over 21 games, hitting three doubles and one home run. He drove in 23 runs.

This year, the Warriors recorded the most wins in a season, enjoyed the program’s longest win streak (18), won their first outright league title and won their first state tournament games, finishing as runners-up to Wichita-Independent in Class 3A.
