Warriors enjoy success at Halstead

Every Marion cross-country runner turned in a season-best time at Halstead Thursday. Cooler temperatures and a slight breeze combined with a relatively flat course contributed to the favorable times and performances.

“This meet was exciting,” coach Dmitry Bucklin said. “We all worked hard, and all came home with new season personal records.

“We also could not have asked for better weather. I really enjoyed watching the runners and seeing how hard they pushed themselves.”

Emily Hague was the Warriors’ highest finisher. She earned the 18th-place medal by crossing the finish line in 22 minutes, 24.10 seconds, trimming nearly 60 seconds from her previous season-best time.

“Emily had a consistent time through the entire race,” Bucklin said. “She had a strong kick at the end and was able to beat another runner at the last second.”

In the junior varsity girls’ race, Meggan Frese finished fifth (24:09.54) and Bethany Grimmett 15th (25:50.78). Both earned a medal and each bettered their season-best times by about 55 seconds.

Meanwhile, Colin Williams paced the boys by placing 29th in 18:41.14, bettering his season best by about 40 seconds and breaking the 19-minute mark for the first time this year.

“(Colin) had a great first mile time and was able to keep that consistent through the race,” Bucklin said. “Colin had a very strong start and just as strong a finish.”

Devin Regnier was 61st (20:24.19), and Tyler Arocha 73rd (20:58.01). It was the first time under 21 minutes for both.

Ethan Darnall earned the 15th-place medal in the junior varsity boys’ race (20:44.69), bettering his time by 1:10.

Coming—Marion was scheduled to compete at Eureka Tuesday. The Warriors will run at the Heart of America league meet at Inman Oct. 13 at 4 p.m.
