Warriors defeat Council Grove

The Marion High School girls basketball team thrashed Council Grove 68-39 Friday. Marion used a 21-9 second quarter to open a 37-20 halftime lead, and never looked back. Julia Zeiner scored 21 points, Lindsay Hett had 15, Kayley Heerey notched 12 and Kristen Steinborn finished with 12 as the Warriors forced 31 turnovers and scored 29 points on the bonus possessions.

Marion led 2-0 and 4-2 on baskets by Julia Zeiner, and back-to-back 2-pointers by Lindsay Hett made it 8-3, forcing the first of many Council Grove timeouts.

The Warriors came out of the timeout in a full-court press, which resulted in a Bridget Lundy steal and a breakaway basket for Zeiner.

After the Braves closed within 10-7, Kristen Steinborn scored two quick baskets, and Zeiner capped the first quarter with another 2-pointer.

Whitney Gordon scored consecutive baskets to start the second, prompting another CG timeout.

After the Braves closed within 21-15, Kayley Heerey hit a pair of foul shots and a layup-and-1 to spark a 16-5 run that carried Marion into halftime with a 17-point lead.

Heerey?s fast break layup made it 49-24 midway through the third quarter, and the Warriors lead hit 30 when Kristin Geis scored both 1-and-1 foul shots to start the fourth quarter. The free throws started the running clock with 7:43 left in the game.

Coming?Marion resumes league play this week, having hosted Collegiate Tuesday and traveling to Halstead Friday.
