Warrior boys defeat Wichita Independent

The Marion boys earned their second win of the season by defeating Wichita Independent, 59-49, Friday at the Heart of America and Central Plains league challenge in McPherson.

The Warriors built a 17-8 lead by the end of the firs quarter, led by Sam Zinn, who scored six points.

“We got off to a 9-0 or 10-0 run,” coach Randy Skiles said. “We just played really good defense in the full court and made it hard for them to get some good looks.”

Zinn added a pair of 2-pointers in the second period to reach 10 points for the game, but the Panthers closed the gap in the quarter, for a 26-21 Marion lead at halftime.

Eli Hett and Blaine Mermis drained 3-pointers in the third quarter, as Marion outscored Independent, 15-8, to enjoy a 41-29 advantage at the final break.

Although Independent scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, Marion countered with an 18-point effort, maintaining a double-digit margin at the buzzer. Noah Dalrymple scored all eight of his points in the fourth quarter.

“I thought we out-hustled them, and we just played hard,” Skiles said. “We’re starting to rebound the ball better, and we’re starting to get guys more involved offensively. We just need to clean up the turnovers.”

Zinn led the Warriors with 16 points. Chase Stringer added 12.

Coming—Marion (2-3) was scheduled to play at Hillsboro (4-1) Tuesday. The Warriors will return to action after the holiday break, traveling to Ell-Saline Jan. 5.
