Hillsboro?s Grant Shewey (top) and Harry Faber (bottom) compete at the Class 3A regional tournament Friday. Both qualified for state competition later this week.
Grant Shewey and Harry Faber parlayed whatever home-court advantage they may have had Friday into a pair of state tournament berths during the Class 3A regional tournament at the Sports Complex in Hillsboro.
With the top six finishers qualifying for state, Shewey defeated Faber 6-3, 6-1 for fifth and sixth place, respectively.
?It was great to see Grant and Harry continue their outstanding play and qualify for state,? coach Stuart Holmes said. ?Once again, our regional was the strongest in the state with eight guys in singles good enough to qualify and potentially medal at state. To have both of our singles players qualify is outstanding.?
Shewey, seeded No. 3, blanked Mikel Houser of Douglass 6-0, 6-0, then lost to No. 6 seed Garrett Prilliman of Conway Springs 7-6, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. The Trojan senior then defeated Evan Bentley of Hutch?inson Trinity 6-3, 6-3 to qualify for the fifth-place match against his teammate.
?Grant qualifies for state for the third year in a row,? Holmes said. ?I was pleased how he bounced back after a disappointing loss in the quarterfinals to another good player who played an excellent match.?
Faber, seeded No. 8, won his first-round match against Kyle Thompson of Neodesha 6-1, 6-0, then lost to eventual champion Jacob Maddox of Wichita Independent 6-1, 6-2. Faber defeated Vishnu Nagireddy of Independent 6-2, 7-5 to reach the fifth-place match.
?Harry played especially good tennis in his state-qualifying match (verus Nagireddy),? Holmes said. ?Harry won the first set 6-2, but was down 5-3 in the second set. He kept battling and was able to play some great points and win four games in a row to close out the match. It was awesome.?
In doubles play, Daniel Gray and Jeff Pritchard, seeded seventh, came within one match win of qualifying for the next level. The Trojan twosome opened with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win over Darnell and Hodson of Chaparral, then lost to McCoy and King of Independent (6-2, 6-0) and Trifiletti and Bellar of Conway Springs 6-3, 6-0 in the state-qualifying match.
?Their losing 6-3, 6-0 in that match doesn?t tell the whole story, as there were a number of close games and numerous deuces,? Holmes said. ?Jeff and Daniel were very competitive, but the other team seemed to get the momentum and ended up winning almost all the close games.?
Hillsboro?s second doubles team of Ty Carey and Tyler Funk, seeded ninth, was eliminated in two matches. They lost to Powell and Fox 6-0, 6-0, and to Trifiletti and Bellar 6-3, 6-0.
The state tournament begins Friday at the Riverside Tennis Complex in Wichita. At press time, the pairings had not been released.
