Trojans secure season’s first win

The Hillsboro softball team ran into a buzzsaw in Pratt’s Paige Huber, who pitched a pair of shutouts Thursday in an 8-0 and 11-0 sweep of the Trojans at the Sports Complex.

The Greenback senior allowed four hits and struck out 14 Trojans in the opener, then came back in Game 2 with a two-hitter with four more strikeouts. Only one Trojan made it as far as third base.

In the first game, Taylor Helmer and the defense limited Pratt to a single run through three innings. But the Greenbacks got to the Trojan left-hander for seven runs in the final four innings.

In Game 2, Pratt led only 2-0 versus Helmer, but a six-run fourth inning broke the game wide open.

With the sweep, the Trojans slipped to 1-8 for the season.

Nickerson—The Trojans scored their first victory of the season April 13 with an 8-5 win over Nickerson in a rescheduled doubleheader from March 28. Par for the course, rain returned to cancel the second game of the afternoon.

Hillsboro score two runs in the first inning. Sarah Jost drew a leadoff walk, Ava Weisbeck drove her home with a single, then scored on a single by Mesa Merrell.

Nickerson came right back with two runs in the bottom of the first, then took a 3-2 lead in the second inning on a triple and a passed ball.

The Trojans took the lead for good in the top of the fifth on a single by Sam Moss for one run and a double by Cheyenne Bernhard that drove in two.

Hillsboro scored another run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to lock down that first victory for the team and for pitcher Taylor Helmer (1-6), who surrendered 14 hits and eight runs.

Coming—Hillsboro was scheduled to play at Lyons Tuesday and then at Kingman Friday.
