The Hillsboro tennis team placed eighth out of 10 teams at the Mid-Central Activities Association tournament held Saturday at the Sports Complex in Hillsboro. Hesston won the team title with 85 points, followed by Wichita Collegiate (65), Ellin?wood (61), Smoky Valley (59), Sterling (45), Lyons (41), Nicker?son (36), Hillsboro (23), Hoising?ton (19) and Haven (14).
Becky Faber turned in the best performance for the young Trojan squad, placing fifth in No. 1 singles. The Trojan sophomore lost her opening round to Natalie Farha of Collegiate (2-9), then defeated Gentry McCleland of Ellinwood (9-4) and Baye Harper of Nickerson (9-1).
In No. 2 singles, Kelsey Bartel finished sixth. She lost her opening round to the eventual champion, Rachel Hageman of Hesston (0-9), then defeated Tailor McKinnis of Lyons (9-3) before losing to Kylie Combs of Nickerson (6-9) in the fifth-place match.
In No. 1 doubles, Emma Heyen and Trisha Pankratz lost in the play-in round to Cline and Schlotterback of Lyons (0-9) in their only match.
In No. 2 doubles, Elise Heyen and Aubrey Meier lost to Schremmer and Bitter of Hoisington (3-9) in the play-in round, then lost to Buckman and Tague of Sterling (0-9) and Kemp and Knepp of Haven (6-9).
Coming?The post-season begins Thursday morning for the Trojans when they travel to Hutchinson Trinity for the Class 3-2-1A regional tounament. Joining them in the field will be the host team, Alma-Wabaunsee, Lyons and Sterling.
If any Trojans advance, they will return to the Sports Complex on Saturday morning for the sub-state tournament.
