Trojans claim 2nd at Conway Quad

The Hillsboro High tennis team opened its season Thursday with a second-place finish at the Conway Springs Varsity Quad.

The Trojans finished with 13 team points behind the Conway Springs varsity with 24 points, and ahead of the Conway Springs JV with 12 and McPher?son with 5.

The Trojans were led by a second-place finish in No. 1 doubles by Clay Shewey and Taylor Hagen. In the round-robin format, the pair defeated McPher?son 8-3, lost to Conway Springs varsity 2-8 and defeated the CS JV 8-4.

In No. 1 singles, Jarod Hamm defeated T.J. Smith of McPher?son 8-6, then lost to Mitchell Kibbe of Conway Springs 0-8 and Kyle Burger of CS JV 2-8.

In No. 2 singles, Joe Fisher defeated Ryan Clark of McPherson 8-0, lost to Allen Lange of Conway Springs 0-8 and defeated Tyler Martin of CS JV 8-4. In No. 2 doubles, Nolan Dirks and Ben Gottsch defeated McPherson 8-6, lost to Conway Springs 1-8 and lost to CS JV 1-8.

?It was a good start to the season as all the guys won a match,? coach Stuart Holmes said. ?A new doubles team of Taylor and Clay looked promising.?

The Trojans were scheduled to compete at Smoky Valley Tuesday, then will host the Hills?boro Invitational Thursday at the Sports Complex. Matches will begin at 3 p.m.
