Trojan wrestlers earn two CKL titles

Hillsboro wrestlers captured weight-class championships in two weight classes Saturday at the Central Kansas League tournament in Lindsborg.

Bret Mueller won the 138-pound class by defeating Tyler Smith of Halstead by major decision, 14-0, then defeating Cooper Crump of Pratt, 7-4.

Tyrell Thiessen claimed the 285 title by pinning Jonathan Ortiz of Lyons twice.

?It was good to see Tyrell back in the lineup after dealing with illnesses over the past month, and Bret continues to get stronger as the season progresses,? coach Scott O?Hare said.

Hillsboro?s next-best performance came at 160, where Tanner Jones finished as the runner-up. He defeated Matt Steele of Hesston in the first round, 6-0, then pinned Evan Barber of Lyons before losing a 3-1 decision to Spencer Bird of Smoky Valley, who is ranked in Class 4A.

?Tanner is really starting to put things together and is looking really good,? O?Hare said.

Also competing for Hillsboro were: Jon Carey, who placed seventh at 120; River Cecil, who finished fourth at 132; Jesse Meier who placed fourth at 152; and Cody Craney, who was fourth at 170.

?The underclassmen continue to battle hard and show signs of marked improvement,? O?Hare said. ?They just have not quite turned the corner to have these improvement convert into wins. They continue to gain valuable experience and as long as they continue to learn from the losses and fix their mistakes, this season will pay off big for them down the road.?

With a limited lineup, Hillsboro placed fifth among seven schools as a team. Smoky Valley won with 130.5 points, followed by: Pratt 115, Lyons 65, Hesston 52, Hillsboro 41, Halstead 39.5 and Nickerson 8.5.

?I was pleased with the performance of the guys this weekend,? O?Hare said. ?It was a great finish to the regular season having all three of our upper classmen finish in the top two.?

As a warm-up for league, the Trojans competed in a double dual at Lindsborg on Thursday, losing to the host school and to Hoisington and Marion.

Coming?Hillsboro will compete at the Class 3-2-1A regional tournament Friday and Satur?day in Eureka. The top four finishers at each weight will earn a trip to Hays for the Class 3-2-1A State Championships, Feb. 23-24.
