Trojan track teams place 2nd at home

With Josh Richert and Emily Sechrist each earning a pair of gold medals, the Hillsboro track and field team opened its season with second-place team finishes for both boys and girls in the four-team meet at Joel H. Wiens Stadium.

Hesston dominated both divisions, with the boys rolling up 120 points and the girls 138.5.

Hillsboro boys finished with 66 points followed by Centre with 41 and Goessel 34. The Trojan girls totaled 65.5 points to outscore Centre with 36 and Goessel with 30.

Richert and Sechrist earned their gold in distance races. Richert won the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 12 seconds and the 1,600 in 4:54.

Sechrist, the defending Class 3A state champion in the 3,200, won Tuesday?s race by 52 seconds in 12:06. She won the 1,600 by 1:37 in 5:43.

Also winning gold for the Trojans were Avery Frantz with a leap of 41 feet, 6 inches in the triple jump, Layne Heiser in the pole vault (8-6) and the 4×400 team that included Micah Mash?burn, Franz, Tyler Proffitt and Richert (3:48).

The Hillsboro girls got a first-place effort from Taylor Vogt in the shot put (29-7) and Morganne Hamm in the discus (86-9).

Coming?The Trojans were scheduled to compete Tuesday in a five-team Central Kansas Track League meet at Goessel. Next Tuesday they travel to Moundridge for a five-team CKTL meet hosted by Canton-Galva.
