The Hillsboro tennis team placed fourth at its second home tournament of the season, the Trojan Invitational, last Tuesday.
Wichita Independent won the event with 60 points, followed by Sterling (56), Hesston (56), Hills?boro (42), Wichita Trinity (34) and Wichita Collegiate (17).
The No. 1 doubles team of Taylor Hagen and Jarod Hamm paced the Trojans with a second-place finish. They defeated Cheshier and Fyfe of Neodesha 8-0, and Dahlsten and Geidel of Hesston 8-4, before losing the title match to Kilgore and Smith of Independent 8-1, a Class 4A regional champion last season.
?It was good to see Taylor and Jarod continue to play well as they had an especially good win against a solid Hesston team in the semifinals,? coach Stuart Holmes said.
In No. 2 doubles, Jesse Allen and Harry Faber placed fourth, defeating Corrigan and Pavetto of Collegiate 8-3, then losing to Jaderston and Prather of Sterling 8-5 and King and Lohnes of Independent 8-2 in the third-place match.
In No. 1 singles, Grant Shewey defeated Ty Fiegel of Collegiate 8-0, then lost to eventual champion Corban Aspegren of Independent 8-0 in the semi?finals and 8-1 to Jordan Stewart of Sterling in the third-place match.
In No. 2 singles, Sam Book?less, battling a sprained ankle most of the day, lost to Jake Meeth of Indepen?dent 8-1, then defeated Thompson of Neodesha 8-2 before losing to Jonathan Dennill of Collegiate 8-4.
Coming?The Trojans were schedule to compete at the Hesston Invitational Tuesday, then will compete at the league tournament Monday at Hillsboro. Matches begin at 8 a.m.
