Hillsboro tennis coach Stuart Holmes used the quadrangular meet in Sterling Thursday as a change of pace for his players.
Grant Shewey and Jarod Hamm, who have been playing singles all season, teamed up for doubles and took third place with a 1-2 record.
Harry Faber and Jeff Pritchard, who have been playing doubles this season, competed in singles with Faber taking third place at 1-2 while Pritchard finished 0-3.
?Sometimes it is nice to switch from our normal lineup,? Holmes said. ?It was good for our sophomores, Harry Faber and Jeff Pritchard, to get some experience playing singles, and you can better learn what to work on to improve.?
In No. 1 singles, Faber lost 8-4 in his opening match to Jacob Penner of Hesston, then defeated Tyler Lamb of Ellsworth 8-2 before losing 8-4 to Jake Jaderton of Sterling.
Playing No. 2, Pritchard lost 8-0 to Keegan LeFevre of Hess?ton, 8-6 to Isaac Herzog of Ells?worth and 8-4 to Zach Brashear of Sterling.
Meanwhile, in No. 1 doubles, Shewey and Hamm defeated Cole Burnside and Devin Swank of Hesston 8-5, then lost 8-2 to Logan Gose and Josh Rankin of Ellsworth and 8-2 to Jordan Stewart and Keaton Prather of Sterling.
?Grant and Jarod played well in doubles and had a lot of close games in each of their three matches against some quality teams,? Holmes said. ?To a degree, the game count didn?t reflect the closeness of their two losses.?
Also competing for Hillsboro were Tyler Funk and Nodari Lomidze, who lost their three matches in No. 2 doubles by scores of 8-0, 8-1 and 8-0.
Circle?Hillsboro competed April 14 in a quadrangular at Circle that was abbreviated by rain.
Playing No. 1 singles, Grant Shewey won his first match 8-7 (7-1) over Neal Supernaw of Valley Center, then beat Trent Jacks of Circle 8-5.
Jarod Hamm, playing No. 2 singles, defeated Corbin Bosch of Valley Center 8-3 and was leading Lukas Weber of Circle 6-2 when play was suspended.
In No. 1 doubles, Harry Faber and Daniel Gray lost 8-2 to Tyler Harris and Conor Travis of Valley Center, then defeated Brian Kessler and Tony Treweeke of Circle 8-6.
In No. 2 doubles, Tyler Funk and Jeff Pritchard lost 8-2 to Andrew Mayfield and Max Berning of Valley Center and 8-1 to Tracy Kepler and Devin Henderson of Circle.
