The Marion wrestling team competed at the Onaga Duals Friday.
Three Warriors claimed first place. Charlie Nordquist (182 pounds) and Tyler Palic (195) went 5-0 on the day to win their respective weight classes, while Bryce Shults won the 138-pound weight class. He went 4-1, with his loss coming to Kolby Droegemeier, the third-ranked wrestler from Wabaunsee at 145 pounds.
“Bryce won the 138-pound division but against Wabaunsee we bumped him up to wrestle the No. 3 wrestler in the state at 145,” coach Tyler McMichael said. “Bryce wrestled really well in this match, completely dominating the second and third period. The final score was 8-4, and the one five-point move in the first period is how Bryce lost. The match was very intense, and he almost had it.”
Five Warriors finished second: Ethan Darnall went 4-1 at 120 pounds; Jarrett Johnson (132) went 4-1; Noah Albin (152) went 3-1; Kolton Brewer (160) went 3-2; and Jarrett McLinden (285) went 4-2.
Brock Mitchell went 4-1 at 145 but did not place.
The Warriors finished second as a team.
Marion lost to Perry Lecompton in Round 1, 48-24, then won its next four duals over Pleasant Ridge, 48-6; Wabaunsee, 42-19; Onaga 52-6; and Rock Creek, 54-6.
“I thought that everyone wrestled well Friday,” McMichael said. “The team started out rocky in the first round but picked it up as the night went on.”
Coming—Marion will wrestle at Chase County Saturday. Matches are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
