Three Hillsboro wrestlers achieved a top-four finish at the large Hesston Invitational Saturday.

Tanner Jones (3-1) and Tyrell Thiessen (3-1) finished third at 160 and 285 pounds, respectively, while Bret Mueller (3-2) was fourth at 138.

?Bret, Tanner and Tyrell all looked very good at times, especially in matches where they started with a high level of confidence,? coach Scott O?Hare said.

?However, in the matches against better opponents, particularly in the semifinals, we looked a little flat and tentative. This is something they will have to work on improving.

?As they gain confidence in what they want to do, hopefully their level of intensity will also improve.?

In the team competition, Smoky Valley nearly lapped the field with 233 points. Hillsboro placed 10 with 44.5 points. Also competing for Hillsboro were Jon Carey (0-2 at 120), Cody Delk (0-2 at 145) and Jesse Meier (1-2 at 152).

?We went into the tournament a little short-handed due to illness and injury,? O?Hare said. ?It was a good opportunity for the six that competed to measure their progress.

?This was a fairly competitive tournament in many weights, and it gave us an opportunity to see where we are at and expose the things we need to work on most,? he added.

?I was pleased the three upperclassmen all got into the medal round, but had hoped that we might be able to pick up a few more wins from our underclassmen.?

Hillsboro competed on the mats a little more than a day after the loss of assistant coach Kurt Bowman, who battled various physical challenges until his death Thursday.

?This was a difficult week for our team, so it?s hard to say if this tournament is a good measure for us,? O?Hare said.

?However, I have no doubt they are improving. We will continue to work on technique, wrestling with more mental and physical toughness, and expect additional mat time to help us progress.?

Coming? The Trojans will co-host the Marion County Dual Tournament with Marion Friday. Matches will begin at 3 p.m. at Hillsboro?s Brown Gymnasium. Also participating are Bennington, Bluestem, Clear?water, Douglass, El Dorado, Fredonia, Minneapolis, Republic County, Rock Creek and Wabaunsee.
