Sontag takes third at Trojan tourney

Ty Carey competes against Dieckhoff of Wichita Trinity in his opening match. He lost 8-0 and went 1-1 in pool play before losing to teammate Leo Sontag in the third place match.Playing with a revamped format, Hillsboro?s Leo Sontag defeated his own teammate, Ty Carey, to place third in No. 2 singles at the seven-school Trojan Invita?tional last Tuesday.

?Due to some divisions originally having an odd number of entries instead of an even number, our doubles team of River (Cecil) and Josh (Funk) played in the No. 2 doubles division and Leo was moved to No. 2 singles so there would be an even number in more divisions in order to avoid players having byes and not getting at least three matches at the meet,? coach Stuart Holmes said.

In his No. 2 singles pool, Sontag lost 8-2 to Penner of Hesston and defeated Mitchell of Wichita Indepen?dent 8-3.

In the other pool, Carey lost 8-0 to Dieckhoff of Wichita Trinity and defeated Albin of Neodesha 8-3.

In their doubles pool, Cecil and Funk lost 8-1 to Eyster and Edwards of Wichita Collegiate and 8-0 to Lloyd and Mueller of Inde?pendent. In the battle for fifth, they lost 8-3 to Johnson and Albin of Neodesha.

?All the guys continue to have great attitudes and work hard at improving,? Holmes said.

Coming? The Trojans were scheduled to compete Tuesday at the Hesston Invitational, then will travel to Halstead Monday for the Central Kansas League meet. Matches begin at 9 a.m.
