Sontag second in HHS tennis debut

The four-member Hills?boro tennis team opened its season Thursday at a four-team invitational hosted by Conway Springs.

Leo Sontag won two of his three matches at No. 1 singles to earn a second-place metal. The senior exchange student lost to Grant Buller of Conway Springs, 8-1, then defeated Nick Carlson of McPherson, 8-5, and Dawson Sones of Conway Springs, 8-1.

?Leo has played some tennis growing up in Brazil with his family, enough that his skill level allowed him to be competitive right away,? said coach Stuart Holmes.

Meanwhile, Josh Funk went 0-3 in his season debut at No. 2 singles. He lost 8-0 to Derek Pauly of Conway, 8-1 to Price Kramer of McPher?son and 8-0 to Jed Chitwood of Conway.

In doubles, Ty Carey and River Cecil lost 8-0 to Van?curen and Koch of Conway, 8-1 to Holthus and Hollis of McPherson, and 8-1 to Davis and Fisher of Conway.

?All the guys worked hard and kept a good attitude, and it was neat that Leo was able to play well enough to earn a second-place medal at the first meet,? Holmes said.

Coming?The Trojans were scheduled to play at Smoky Valley Tuesday, then will host the Hillsboro Invitational at the Sports Complex Thursday. The lineup of schools includes Chapman, Circle, Conway Springs, Hutch Trinity, Smoky Valley, Sterling and Salina Sacred Heart.
