Led by Grant Shewey?s fourth-place finish in singles, the Hillsboro tennis team placed fourth Thursday among seven teams at the Hillsboro Invita?tional.

Sterling won the tournament with 46 points, followed by Con?way Springs and Hutchinson Trinity with 42, Hillsboro 15, Circle 12, Smoky Valley 5 and Chapman 0.

Shewey defeated Wesley Johnson of Smoky Valley in the opening round 8-0, then beat Evan Bentley of Hutchinson Trinity in the quarterfinals 8-2. In the semifinals, the senior lost to Ross Rassmussen of Conway Springs 8-6, then came back to beat Eric Banning of Trinity in the third-place match.

Harry Faber won his first-round match against Chet Floyd of Chapman 8-1, then lost to Banning in the quarterfinals 8-4. In the consolation bracket he lost to Garrett Prilliman of Conway Springs 8-6.

?Grant and Harry played well, but unfortunately lost some very close matches that really changed their placing,? coach Stuart Holmes said. ?We?ll keep working to improve each day and be ready to take advantage of our opportunities next time.?

In doubles, Daniel Gray and Jeff Pritchard placed 13th. They lost to Suppes and Hawk of Smoky Valley in the first round 8-3, to Hughes and Deluca of Trinity 8-1, then defeated LaMunyan and Richard of Circle 6-2, and Peterson and Schrag of Smoky Valley 6-0.

The doubles team of Tyler Funk and Ty Carey lost to eventual champions Banning and Lindt of Trinity 8-0, Fink and O?Neal of Chapman 8-2, Peterson and Schrag 6-3 and LaMunyan and Richard 6-3 for 16th place.

?Daniel and Jeff finished the day playing well and won their last two matches playing some solid doubles,? Holmes said. ?Ty and Tyler won more games and were more competitive in more matches.?

Smoky Valley?Grant Shewey placed fifth in singles and Harry Faber won the consolation side of the bracket to lead Hillsboro at the Smoky Valley Invitational April 3.

?It was an especially competitive field of 14 players that included a number of state qualifiers and medalists from last year,? coach Stuart Holmes said.

The doubles team of Jeff Pritchard and Daniel Gray went 1-3 for the tournament while Ty Carey and Tyler Funk went 0-4.

Coming?Hillsboro was scheduled to play at Sterling Tuesday and at Circle Thurs?day beginning at 3 p.m.

Next Tuesday, Hillsboro will host the Trojan Invitational at 3 p.m.
